Cliburn died of bone cancer at age 78.
According to Page’s obituary, Cliburn is best known for winning a gold medal at the 1958 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow, Russia. Cliburn has also played piano for every president since Eisenhower.
“Since his historic 1958 victory at the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, Mr. Cliburn has reached across political frontiers with the universal message of beautiful music,” said President Barack Obama.
Page has held the position of chief classical music critic at The Washington Post since 1995. He is also a professor in the USC Thornton School of Music.
