School of Journalism Director Geneva Overholser was quoted by The News & Observer in the article “Stanton stepping down as L.A. Times editor; Maharaj to assume top newsroom job.”
Overholser said that Stanton “presided over the newsroom during an exceptionally challenging time…Yet he managed to lead the staff to do remarkable reporting.”
A Dec. 13 Washington Post article, “Los Angeles Times editor will step down after 4-year tenure, be replaced with managing editor,” cited journalism professor Bryce Nelson.
“There’s a lot of turmoil about revenue, the power of the online edition, the role of the print edition,” Nelson said. “This is going on in every American newsroom but it’s been especially anguished at the Times.”
